Ling Ling (LING) on Moonshot – The OG dog meme cir. 2004

The “Ling Ling” dog head is a long-running, bizarre inside joke at the game studio Bungie. It’s an actual preserved dog head in a jar of formaldehyde, and it has been a part of the studio’s culture for decades.

The most widely accepted story is that in the early days of Bungie (1990s), a studio employee had a roommate who was a medical student. When the roommate moved out, they left behind a preserved dog head in a jar. Bungie, known for its quirky humor, decided to keep it. The head is rumored to be kept in a refrigerator at the studio to this day.

The dog head is often jokingly referred to as “Step 5” in Bungie’s “seven-step plan for world domination,” a nod to the studio’s fascination with the number seven. It has appeared as an Easter egg and in a variety of other media.

In 2004, a graffiti depiction of the head appeared in the Halo 2 multiplayer map “Zanzibar.”

In 2010, an artistic rendition of the head was featured in a tribute room in Halo: Reach.

In 2014, Bungie used the head in a Facebook post promoting the Destiny beta, where fans were challenged to guess what was in a box.

Over the years, the story has become an urban legend, with fictional tales appearing on Bungie’s own forums. However, the core of the joke remains: the macabre but celebrated symbol of Bungie’s unique culture and humor.
