I’ve been thinking a lot about online security lately — the passwords, 2FA, email accounts, crypto wallets, and all other digital stuff we juggle every day. It seems like every other week there’s yet another massive data breach or hack in the news, so honestly, it makes me question: how safe are our accounts in 2025?

For one thing, the security tools have greatly improved. Password managers, hardware wallets, post-quantum algorithms in certain crypto projects, and resplendent 2FA all make it more difficult for an attacker to get inside.

But on the other hand, threats are getting just as clever in short order — AI-driven phishing attacks, social engineering vectors, cross-platform leaks and more sophisticated than ever malware can have us feeling like we’re always just one click away from disaster.

I’ve done my best to secure my accountsand things — strong, unique passwords, hardware 2FA, careful with what I click — but the more that I read and learn about this stuff, the more uncertain I feel that’s enough. Is anyone already noticing the existence of a next-gen threat that feels truly scary? Or is it largely hype compared to the basics that we already know and try to follow?

Curious to know from he community: What’s in store for account security in 2025?

Do you have tools, strategies or habits that help make you more efficient? And when do you separate realistic precautions from, as he puts it, “overkill”?
