If I showed you a Guy Fawkes mask right now, what would you think? It’s one of the most universally recognized memetic symbols online- A call to rebellion, an amorphous collective of chaos causing activists, grey hat activitists, and the chronically connected. What started as a loose group of 4channers in 2003 quickly rose to international infamy through a series of escalating pranks, hacks and shock tactics that spread around the world. In the early 2000s thousands of people around the world united by the mask of anonymity to spread messages that rose beyond the individual into a schizo-collective entropic force of chaos, good and evil. The mask, a symbol adopted from a rebellion 400 years before, became ubiqitous online for a representation of an unstoppable, cult like force majeur. Fast forward to 2025, and the world looks very different, yet strikingly similar. We are on the verge of another housing market collapse, global rebellions and wars escalating at a rate not seen since 2008, and a general sense of dis-ease throughout our global culture. In amoungst the muck, Anonymous seems to be being reborn, this time with a web3 flavour. The token $ANON (Anonymous- CA FhvBDEr46meW6NHWHNeShDzvbXWabNzyT6uGinEgBAGS) was launched on Bags.fm a month ago with all trading fees being directed to Aubery Cottle, a famous and contentious founder of the anonymous movement. Since then, a community of Anons have rallied around the token, and in true Anonymous fashion, some crazy developments have started happening. Recently, a Russian nuclear plant was hacked and the hacker claimed it was funded by $ANON. As I write this, news is emerging of another hack on a chinese crypto platform. There are also devs working on creating a bounty system for digital shenanigans, with $ANON being the currency. Are we seeing the rise of a never before seen movement coin that ties old school memetic legends, cypher punk culture and OG 4chanism with the hyperfinancialisation of digital ideas?
